Leaf Guards in Toronto

Considering Gutter Guards for Your Toronto Home? Read These Leaf Guard Reviews First
There’s a lot to like about fall: the crisp colours, the opportunity to bring out cozy sweaters from the closet, the return to comfortable daytime temperatures - but the worst thing? The worst thing about fall in Toronto is remembering you need to clean your gutters out before winter hits.

The eavestroughs outside your Toronto home have an important job to do: they redirect water from your roof to the ground so that your home’s drainage system doesn’t get overwhelmed and your home doesn’t suffer from leaky roofs or structural damage.

But when fall comes, harsh winds blow dirt, leaves, and other debris into your gutters, clogging them up and making them all but useless. If you don’t clean your gutters out before winter hits, the water inside your gutters freezes. If this happens, your gutters could even collapse. That’s an expensive mistake you want to avoid.

Luckily, some talented engineers dreamed up a solution to your gutter woes so that you won’t need to clean them nearly as often. Leaf guards, also known as gutter guards, come in a wide variety of styles but all serve the same purpose: they let water pass into your eavestroughs and through the downspout while keeping leaves out. This prevents nasty buildups, which means you only need to hop on a ladder to clean your gutters once a year, not three to four times!

But not all leaf guards are created equal. We at Eavestroughing Toronto are Toronto’s gutter experts, so we’ve put together this review of the different styles of leaf guards you can find at your local hardware store. Not sure the DIY route is for you? Call us—we’ve got a wide variety of styles and can install them for you for a reasonable fee. Talk about convenient!

What Are the Best Leaf Guards for Gutters?
Not all leaf guards for gutters are made equal because not all gutter guards serve the same purpose. The needs of a household in Florida or Vancouver are very different from those in Toronto. We have way more precipitation and snow in the winter months, so it’s crucial your leaf guard system allows water to flow as needed to take pressure off your eavestroughs.

You have four different choices of gutter guard systems:

  1. Mesh gutter guards: These are made of a metal screen that allows water to flow through it and keeps the leaves on top. Unfortunately, in our testing, these often got blocked on the top by leaves, which meant we cleaned them as often.
  2. Bottle brush gutter guards: A spiky plastic material goes straight into your gutters. We don’t recommend these for life in Toronto - too many leaves fall here for them to keep functioning properly.
  3. Nylon or foam gutter guards: These leaf guards are shaped like a wedge and go directly inside your gutter. They have a slick surface which prevents water and ice buildup and are great for the winter
  4. Reverse-curve gutter guards: These systems didn’t work as well for our tests. They risk collapsing if snow builds up on top of them.
